Our Style of Karate
We teach traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate, a style of Karate that trains the mind as well as the body. Emphasis is placed on learning practical self defence skills, building strength, co-ordination, endurance and flexibility which drastically improve fitness and confidence levels.
Central to Goju-ryu is kata: detailed choreographed patterns of movements practised either solo or in pairs. The style focuses on kata, rather than sport or competition however there is opportunity to compete if so desired.
Goju-ryu translates to “hard-soft style”. Go, which means hard, refers to closed hand techniques or straight linear attacks. Ju, which means soft, refers to open hand techniques and circular movements.
When you join Taupaki Goju Ryu Karate, you are joining a dojo within a much bigger organisation, Jundokan New Zealand, an official branch of Jundokan Japan, which can give you direct access to some of the highest graded and respected karate masters in the world. In 2016 for example we were privileged to host Sensai Tetsu Gima and Sensai Tsuneo Kinjo (9th dan Okinawa masters) at our ‘Masters Seminar ’ in Kumeu.
Goju Ryu can be practised by anyone, regardless of build, gender, age or athletic ability and whatever your physical condition. No previous proficiency in sport is needed, rather a commitment and a desire to progress.
We are a family friendly club and welcome new members at any time of the year. Just come along to a class and try it out. We offer two weeks free so you can try it out before you commit.
